Hi family!
It's been a great October so far! Isaac had a UKEtoberfest on the UCM campus. He hosted a middle school from Blue Springs. The middle school teacher presented to the undergrad students about what it is like to run a ukulele class. Isaac was very happy about this because it validated a lot of what he has been saying about the power of the Uke for music ed. They did a "Uke or treat" where the kids had to go around and do a trick on the ukulele (play a chord, do a strumming pattern, pick a melody, etc.) for a treat. They ended the event with a Uke play along. It was a blast. Woot woot. Isaac also received a grant from the university to start building a Music Maker Space. It was only $1800.00 but it is a start.
William is so much like Isaac!! He made his own Halloween costume (King K Rool), started writing a song, and makes up all kinds of songs, rhymes, and noises while doing his homework to keep him focused. It's the coolest thing to watch your children grow and develop into individuals and at the same time see the genetics influence who they are becoming. We finished watching the Lord of the Rings series. Watching Return of the King with Will and Van reminded me of Isaac and me watching the film together for the first time. Me (Van) asking questions and struggling to follow the storylines and Isaac(Will) answering them without a hitch. Will finished reading "The Hobbit" this week and so we started watching the first film of that series tonight. Lots of Peter Jackson and JR Tolkien in the house! Will seems to be doing a lot better. His first month of school was a major struggle, but I think things are improving. In addition to the aforementioned projects, he's also making comic books and making an animation using an app. I should be able to link the animation when he's done so you can watch it.
Van loves school. He's so proud to show me his papers everyday. His goal is to get all A's and so far so good! Van is a big time goal setter. Today, his goal was to learn a new magic trick using cards. He got onto YouTube and found a tutorial. With a little help from his dad, he learned it and now likes to do it over and over for his family. He wants to set up a hot chocolate stand and charge extra money for the customers to see a magic trick. He loves to hear about my days at preschool. When he gets in the shower at night, he wants me to stay in the bathroom and tell him about my day at preschool.
Today we went on a Sunday walk to Marr Park. Warrensburg has these beautiful woodsy parks all within 5 miles from our home. William kept doing a "Super Mario Run" where he'd make the Mario noise and run really fast. Van kept asking Isaac and I for a boost where we'd hold his hands and launch him forward. We laughed at how he'd run only 3 steps after his boost and right away ask for another one. We climbed down to the creek. Isaac challenged us to walk the entire creek without getting our feet wet. There were plenty of rocks to make it possible. I just love this time of year when the leaves start changing colors.
Yesterday we went to Hallow Fest at Knob Noster state park. They had a tram ride, a haunted house, and carnival games. Friday we went to the Buckeye Acres pumpkin patch. It's been a fun weekend!
AND CONGRATULATIONS TO ABBEY AND MICHAEL ON THE BIRTH OF THEIR NEW BABY DAUGHTER!! SAWYER LISA BURKS! Yay!!!!!

- Will taught Van that if he pulls his finger really hard after he takes a bite of food, it will take away his gag reflexes. So, while eating, in my opinion, DELICIOUS vegetarian chili, Van was pulling his finger after every bite. Kids! They don't know what's good!
